TIP#6 - Top tips on how to write a song
TIP#6 Shake it up !
One thing I think its important to strive for, is for your song to have something unique.
To achieve this you might need to break a rule, or two..
For example, I’ve just written a song called ‘LINES’ that has just one melodic section. No verse or chorus! It simply repeats the same melody and phrasing. What changes are the dynamics, the singing gets louder and jumps up an octave, and the guitar part goes from softly muted to open picking then strumming. This definitely breaks the ABABCB mould.
There are other ways you can shake things up too. I love in Bruno Mars’ song (yes, I love pop) ‘Locked out of heaven’ in which he uses these crazy ‘ah ah ooh’ sounds which to me sound like a mechanical monkey on cue, but my kids and I love it ! It’s also an excellent song, but he’s sprinkled something unique on it with that noise.
Your song can be unique in the subject you’re writing about, the instruments you use, your voice, and will the infinite range and blend of melodies, rhythms, beats, and other sounds.
Remember, this is your song. It will reflect something of who you are. Its already beautiful, I can just sense it.
