TIP#2 - Top tips on how to write a song

Ready for the second instalment in your song-writing quest?

TIP#2 Play around.

What if you can’t get inspiration for your song? Sometimes I will pick up a guitar or sit down at the piano and play some chords and, to be honest, mess about. I guess I’m looking for a sound, idea or rhythm that I think “that sounds cool”.

For example, a song I wrote years ago called KAPOW. I stumbled upon the idea strumming through some basic chords - E to Am, with a hammer on and off on the top E string. I then started humming the melody following that little riff, and then found some words which seems to come naturally, rhyming “Oh no, there I go on a roll, Oh Wow, she hit me and Kapow”. It’s a cute song, honest.

You might find jamming with other people helps create some inspiration. If all else fails, listen to your favourite artists and try to write down what you love about their music and why. The magic will come, trust me..
