TIP#1 - Top tips on how to write a song

Welcome to this first of eight blogs on ‘Top tips on how to write a song’ . The first thing I want to say is that there is no one set way to write a song. There are many good ideas out there, some very different to what’s in this blog; so what I’m going to cover are really things that have helped me to write songs, and a bit about my process.

TIP#1 Start somewhere, anywhere.

I don’t think the finished product ever just drops into your head. For me, sometimes I find myself humming a tune in the car or out walking, and I get my phone out and record a voice memo. For me, I find most of my songs start with a melody, without words. That original idea is a tiny, raw, seed. The seed needs to be watered and nourished, but first it needs to be captured! These days its easy with smart phones but always be ready to record that idea when it does pop into your head.
