TIP#3 - Top tips on how to write a song
Now for the sometimes-tricky part of song-writing. Lyrics.
TIP#3 Craft your lyrics
Once you’ve got your melody for what might become a verse or a chorus, you can start putting words to that. Some people start with the words first, whilst others struggle more with lyrics.
What I will say is that this does need some hard work. Its one thing to come up with a 3 chord wonder, another thing to compose a catchy melody, but words take time. Hence the crafting of lyrics.
You can expect the first few songs you write to to sound cheesy. But that’s ok! Keep going.
What if I get stuck? Rather than trying to write the end product lyrics, which can be pressurising, I try to zoom out and to ask myself “what is this song about?” And then write out some ideas, almost like describing scenes (of your imagined music video!) using prose and not being contained to perfectly rhyming sentences. That might open things up a little and give you ideas for what a particular verse might be about, then you can zoom back in and try some lines but this time with a little more on where you’re headed.
And if you’re really stuck or feel like writing lyrics is sucking the fun out of it for you, the collaborate. More on this on the next blog..
